Terms of Service
Welcome to Tiptree, the professional reputation and tipping platform. Please read these terms carefully before using our services.
1. Acceptance of Terms
By accessing or using the Tiptree platform (including tiptree.page and associated applications), you agree to be bound by these Terms of Service. Tiptree provides a platform for professionals, service workers, creators, and businesses to receive tips and build a portable professional reputation via our TrustScore system.
2. Account Types and Verification
Tiptree offers Guest (unregistered) and registered accounts. Guests may send tips subject to platform limits. Creating an account requires email verification and includes a free auto-generated handle.
Registered accounts may rent custom handles (personal, link, team, and event names) billed per term — monthly and yearly terms renew automatically; prepaid multi-year terms (up to five years) are charged once and lapse at term end. Renting a handle requires platform access — a provisionally-covered or staff-verified account. Staff identity verification (KYC/AML — government-issued identification such as National ID, Passport, BVN, or NIN, plus a live 5-15 second selfie video challenge) is required for fundraisers collecting contributions, team-share eligibility, verified badges, and other trust surfaces.
Tiptree reserves the right to suspend, restrict, or ban accounts that fail compliance checks, engage in fraudulent behavior, or violate our Community Standards. Restricted accounts cannot receive tips or request payouts.
3. Tipping, Fees, and Payouts
Platform Fees: Senders always pay exactly the displayed tip amount — Tiptree deducts a fee from each processed tip to cover payment processing and platform maintenance, and recipients are credited the remainder. For domestic transactions (e.g., Nigerian Naira cards), the fee is 3.5% plus a fixed ₦50. For international cards or non-NGN currencies, the fee is 7.0% plus a fixed currency equivalent. Fees are floored at the estimated processor cost.
Tip Limits: Senders are subject to daily and per-transaction caps based on their verification status and origin IP. Recipients are subject to maximum tip caps based on their verification tier and platform ceilings (e.g., a hard platform ceiling applies to comply with FATF CDD triggers).
Payouts: Available funds can be withdrawn to supported bank accounts, mobile money wallets, or other supported destinations, subject to a per-corridor minimum and a transfer fee deducted from each payout (e.g., NGN payouts: ₦50 up to ₦50,000, ₦100 above ₦50,000). Cross-currency payouts are subject to live foreign exchange rates provided by our payment partners (e.g., Flutterwave). A standard 48-hour security hold applies after any modification to payout account details.
4. TrustScore and Reviews
Tiptree employs a proprietary TrustScore (0–100) based on Bayesian estimation. The score reflects a user's professional reputation based on micro-reviews and verified financial transactions.
Review Integrity: TrustScores cannot be purchased, artificially inflated, or manipulated. While professionals may restrict who can review them (e.g., verified users only) or flag inappropriate content, they cannot delete or hide legitimate negative reviews.
Reviews backed by a verified tip carry significantly higher algorithmic weight. Completing identity verification increases the weight of reviews you leave for others, but it does not artificially boost your own TrustScore.
5. Refunds and Chargebacks
Tips are generally non-refundable. In cases of fraud, error, or at Tiptree's discretion, refunds may be issued back to the sender's original payment method. When a refund occurs, the credited tip proceeds are clawed back from the recipient's balance.
If an account incurs excessive chargebacks, Tiptree may freeze the account, withhold payouts, and demand reimbursement for processing penalties.
6. Prohibited Conduct
Users may not use Tiptree for money laundering, terrorist financing, illicit goods, adult content transactions that violate our acceptable use guidelines, or any unlawful activity. Tiptree employs automated velocity limits, pattern detection, and manual compliance reviews. Suspicious activity (e.g., charge retry storms, link fan-in behavior) will result in immediate RiskFlag investigations and potential account termination.
7. Modifications and Liability
Tiptree reserves the right to modify these Terms at any time. We do not guarantee uninterrupted access to the platform and are not liable for delays caused by third-party payment processors. Tiptree provides the infrastructure for tipping and reputation; we are not responsible for the quality of services rendered by the recipient.
